Sona Safaei-Sooreh is an interdisciplinary artist based in Toronto. She holds a BFA in painting from Azad University (Iran), and a BFA in Sculpture/Installation from OCAD University (Canada). Currently she is a candidate for Master of Visual Studies at University of Toronto.
She has shown her work nationally and internationally in KunstraumKreuzberg/Bethanien and NGBK (Berlin), De Bond (Brugge), Artspace (Peterborough), Art Gallery of Windsor (Canada), XPACE (Toronto), Narwhal Projects (Toronto), Harbourfront Centre (Toronto), Thomas Erben Gallery (New York), SESC Vila Mariana (Sao Paulo), Aaran Gallery (Tehran) and Parkingallery (Tehran).
She has received several grants and recognitions such as OAC Exhibition assistance Grant (for Assignments- 2014), OAC Exhibition assistance Grant (for Reworking the Common knowledge- 2014) Project 31 Sculpture/Installation Award (2013), Honourable Mentions: 401 Richmond Career‐Launcher Prize (2013), Wayne Lum Memorial Scholarship (2012), and Sully Corth Memorial Fund Sculpture Scholarship (2011).
She is a co-director at 8-11 Gallery in Toronto and she has co-founded NoYo Artist Residency Project in North York. In January 2013 she curated the video program “Expanded Documentation” for Limited Access IV Festival (video, sound and Performance festival). In summer 2013 she founded “Reworking the Common Knowledge” participatory performance/workshop series. She has also been invited as an external critic/speaker to several courses at OCAD University from 2013-2015.
